The expedition to Borneo of H.M.S. Dido for the suppression of piracy : with extracts from the journal of James Brooke of Sarawak (now agent for the British government in Borneo). Vol. I

The first volume of a revised two volume work, it reproduces mainly extracts from the journal of Sir James Brooke. It starts with a brief, interesting outline of Brooke's life, followed by extracts from his journal about his journey to Borneo, Sarawak, Singapore and other places, with descriptions of the various dyak tribes, their charcteristics, daily lives, customs and ceremonies, produce and trade. There are also accounts of the civil war among the dyak tribes and conflict with the Malays, the suppression of piracy and how he became governor of Sarawak after signing an agreeement with the Rajah on 24 Sept 1841. Includes 3 appendices consisting of a letter to the Zoological Society by Brooke about the forwarding of 5 live orang utangs and other specimens, philogy of the local languages, and a letter from the Rajah of Waju to Brooke and the merchants of Singapore.
