This poem is a significant poetic record of the situation in Singapore in the early years of its independence. It describes the immediate challenges faced by the country and highlights the real threat of social disintegration into violence. The poem stresses what is crucial to the process of nation-building and points out the lack of political and economic options for a state like Singapore. In this sense, we also find here a key record of the choices Singaporeans at the time made to ensure that their lot improve and become more stable.
