This is an early poem by Edwin Thumboo and also possibly his longest. It shows a young Thumboo overwhelmed by the mythological imagination of W. B. Yeats and aiming to do for Malayan culture what Yeats did for Ireland. The five-part poem presents dramatic scenarios for heroic figures with a range of symbols and images and a strong sense of place. Although the craft was criticised by some in its time, from hindsight this poem provides a unique angle into understanding the various concerns that went on to inform Thumboo’s more familiar mature writings.
