This is an important essay in the history of Singaporean literature for several reasons. Not only does it introduce a seminal anthology of Singaporean and Malaysian verse in English edited by Edwin Thumboo, but it also explains the need to encourage such new literatures. Among the first important texts to make this insistence in the region, the volume further offers a short account of how writing has developed in Singapore and Malaysia and differentiates this from the colonial English tradition. A number of significant early pieces by poets such as Ee Tiang Hong, Wong Phui Nam, Muhammad Haji Salleh, Wong May, Robert Yeo, Arthur Yap, Lee Tzu Pheng are cited to make the case.
