Written in two parts, this poem brings together two major aspects in Thumboo’s poetry: his focus on place and individuals he is close to. It describes an uncle who lives near the Singapore River he used to visit. The description becomes a means to capture life and history around the river, immigrant Chinese culture and its literary traditions, and his own memory of surrounding streets and his uncle. It is a good text with which to observe how much Thumboo’s poetry of place has deepened through the years.
