Portrait of Mr. Edwin Tessensohn, 1910s

Description

This is a head and shoulders portrait of Mr. John Edwin Tessensohn who was appointed Municipal Commissioner in 1917, and the first Eurasian to sit in the Legislative Council in 1923. He was Vice-President (1892-1894) and President of Singapore Recreation Club (1894-1896, 1898-1900, 1902-1906, 1910-1927). Tessensohn Road, a street located in Kallang area, is named in his memory. His only son, Mr. Reginald Tessensohn, was Honorary Secretary and Treasurer (1919-1927), Vice-President (1933-1936) and President of Singapore Recreation Club (1930-1932, 1936-1939); and Member of Municipal Commission (1926-1939).
