Description
This is a head-and-shoulder portrait of Dr. Tony Tan Keng Yam (陈庆炎), General Manager of Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation Limited (OCBC) in 1972. He served as Senior Minister of State for Education (1979-1980); Minister for Education (1980-1981, Jan 1985-Dec 1991), Trade and Industry (1981-1986), Finance (Oct 1983-Jan 1985), Health (1985-1986) and Defence (Aug 1995-Aug 2003); Deputy Prime Minister (Aug 1995-Sep 2005); Co-ordinating Minister for Security and Defence (Aug 2003-Sep 2005); the first Vice-Chancellor of National University of Singapore (1980-1981); Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation Limited or OCBC (1992-1995); People's Action Party Member of Parliament for Sembawang (Feb 1979-Sep 1988) and Sembawang GRC (Sep 1988-May 2006); Executive Director and Deputy Chairman of Government of Singapore Investment Corporation or GIC (2005-2011); and Chairman of Singapore Press Holdings Limited (Dec 2005-2011) and National Research Foundation (Jan 2006-Aug 2011). He was sworn in as President of Singapore on 1 September 2011. His maternal grandmother, Madam Annie Tan Sun Neo (b.1894-d.1948), was the daughter of Mr. Tan Jiak Kim (陈若锦, b.1859-d.1917), a wealthy Straits Chinese merchant and philanthropist, and a grandson of Mr. Tan Kim Seng (陈金声, b.1805-d.1864), a prominent Hokkien merchant from Malacca and the founder of Kim Seng and Company, a trading house at Boat Quay. Tony's uncle, Mr. Tan Chin Tuan (b.1908-d.2005), was Managing Director (1942-1972) and Chairman of OCBC (1966-Sep 1983). Title devised by Library staff.
