The obituary was extracted from the Gentleman's magazine of July 1826. It described briefly Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles' illness which led to his death on 5th July, 1826, his career in the East India Company and his administrative ability, intelligence and achievements as Lieutenant Governor of Java from September 1811 to March 1816, Resident of Bencoolen in 1818 and founder of Singapore in 1819. He was also known as a man with many interests, a philanthropist and fine statesman.
