These addresses were made by the members of the Supreme Court of Justice of Batavia, the European Orphan Chamber, the magistrates of Java and members of societies and other public institutions as well as the Dutch inhabitants. They were made to the Honourable Thomas Stamford Raffles, who was Lieutenant-Governor of Java and its dependencies, on the occasion of his return to England in 1816. The contents express gratitude to Raffles for his just and humane administration, protection and support of his government. Translations of the replies from the Emperor of Java and the Sultans and Regents to Raffles'letter concerning his departure and successor are also included.
