River Sungari, Harbin, 1920. Arrangements were made with the Customs for medical inspection of passengers before purchase of tickets. Each steamer was obliged to carry a ship's surgeon on board. This photograph shows steamers along the River Sungari, now known as Songhua River. This photograph was taken in Harbin in 1920, during the second epidemic of pneumonic plague in North Manchuria and East Manchuria. Title devised by Library staff.
