Traditional Chinese paper offerings shop in Chinatown, 1971

Photographer’s annotation on slide: ““Deo, S’pore, 18 Dec 1971.” This 1971 photograph depicts a shop in Chinatown that makes paper offerings for the afterlife. A paper replica of a house is placed at the shop's entrance. The light wooden or bamboo frame of the paper house can be seen, as the paper replica house is being constructed. Such houses and other paper offerings like paper money are burnt to ensure that ancestors or departed relatives are well-provided for, in the afterlife world. Title devised by Library staff.
