Street food stall at Boat Quay, 1953

This photograph shows a close-up view of a street food stall or "native cafe" along the banks of Boay Quay, south of the Singapore River. Operating under a tent, the space is crammed with diners, a drink stall and a food peddler squatting over his wares. These stalls were later moved into Boat Quay Food Centre when the government decided to house street food vendors into licensed and more hygienic hawker centres. Numerous bumboats are parked along the embankment of the River, which are lined with low-rise shophouses. This photograph was taken with a Roflex in February 1953. Title devised by Library staff.
