Commercial Square. 302, in the 1900s : general view

This photograph from G.R. Lambert & Co., taken between 1900 and 1909 shows a view of Commercial Square. As one arrived in Singapore at Johnston’s Pier (left), one was greeted by a study in contrasts: elegant and distinctly colonial buildings such as the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank on the left, the Exchange Building on the right and the most basic, even rustic modes of transport in the form of hand-made sampans (narrow boats) and rickshaws pulled by men. Title from inscription, on front of photograph. Date of creation estimated.
