This 1967 photograph shows an aerial view of the houses along Java Road, in the historic Kampong Glam area. Java Road was known for its masonry workshops, however, it is no longer listed in the street directory. Today, a new Java Road which was constructed in the mid-1990s allows access to Nicoll Highway from Beach Road. At the top left of the photograph is Masjid Hajjah Fatimah. Built between 1845 and 1846, the mosque is known for its unique minaret, which resembles a church spire. It was gazetted a national monument in 1973. Title devised by Library staff.
