Labourer carrying sugar canes

This is a pre-1914 photograph from E. A. Brown's collection. It shows a labourer walking barefoot on the road, with a carrying pole placed on one shoulder. He is carrying two bundles of sugar canes suspended from the pole. Crossing the path of the labourer is a bullock-drawn water cart which has a pipe with holes spraying water on the laterite to settle the dust. The premises of the Straits Photographic Studio can be seen in the background, with the studio’s name painted on the wall. A sign above the studio’s name points towards the Hotel de la Paix nearby in Coleman Street. No date of creation provided. Title devised by Library staff. Information contributed by Richard Hale.
