This photograph shows an elderly lady seated before a professional letter-writer in Kreta Ayer, dictating to him what she wants to convey in a letter to her relative or friend in China. The letter-writer's stall is a makeshift set-up, with a table and some chairs or stools placed along a five-foot way. Tools of the trade, like envelopes and writing pad are seen on the table. Pieces of paper with handwriting are displayed on the wall beside the table, as samples of the letter-writer's penmanship. Date of creation estimated. Title devised by Library staff.
