This 1880s photograph shows the Singapore River. Once the centre of trade, commercial and economic activities, the Singapore River is of great historical importance in the development of early Singapore. The river can be seen congested with sampans. These vehicles were the main form of transportation used in ferrying goods and cargoes between the shophouses and godowns along the river banks and the large shipping vessels in early days. Fort Canning Hill can be seen in the background. Title devised by Library staff. Date of creation estimated.
