This 1982 photograph shows Tanjong Pagar Road, with three-storey shophouses to the right, and the partially visible Metropole Cinema to the left. Tanjong Pagar means "cape of stakes" in Malay, and the road is probably named for the kelongs found in the sea near the area. Fairfield Methodist Church now occupies the Metropole Cinema building. Title devised by Library staff.
