View of Singapore River from Fort Canning. 234, 1880s : general view

This 1880s photograph from G.R. Lambert & Co. shows a view of the Singapore River from Fort Canning Hill. In the middle of the photograph is Elgin Bridge on the river. Coleman Bridge can be partially seen in the foreground. On the north bank of the river (today's Empress Place), is an area for government purposes. The south bank of the river, where one can find shophouses and godowns, is dedicated to trade and commercial activities. Title from inscription, on front of photograph. Date of creation estimated.
