This is a photograph from E. A. Brown's collection. It shows several Malay passenger sampans lined up for a race at the New Year Sea Sports, on 1 January 1925. The annual regatta is held at the Singapore Harbour, off Collyer Quay. The Union Building can be seen in the background on the right. The Varuna can also be seen on the right, near the Union Building. Varuna, the Singapore Harbour Board service tug serves as the regatta’s Committee Boat. Date of creation estimated.
