Hiap Chuan Joo was one of the largest sawmill factories in Singapore. Located at Balestier it produced wooden crates used for beverages including Coca-Cola and Tiger Beer. Taken in the 1950s this photograph shows children in the neighbourhood collecting unused pieces of wood at the sawmill factory. The collected wood pieces were used at home for cooking.
