This photograph shows the original Bengkali Mosque or Masjid Bencoolen, on Bencoolen Street which was built around 1845, by Syed bin Ali Al-Junied for the Muslims who lived nearby. Loudspeakers, attached to the entrance, served to summon the faithful to prayer. Next to the mosque is the former Asia Radio Building. Donated by Sathakathuda Sahib S/O Peer Mohd, at the Heritage Roadshow 2008. HRS3_019. Date of creation estimated. Title devised by Library staff.

Bencoolen Mosque at 59 Bencoolen Street. Built in 1845, the mosque underwent major repairs in 1980. In 2001, the mosque site was re-developed as part of a mixed development comprising commercial block and a 12-storey residential complex, the Somerset Bencoolen Serviced Apartments. The re-developed mosque which is part of the complex was opened to public in May 2004 -
