This 1983 photograph shows North Boat Quay (between Read Bridge and Canning Lane), from Boat Quay, with shophouses and commercial buildings. Part of a bridge can be seen to the left. Bumboats can be seen docked at the quay. Also known as tongkangs or lighters, these bumboats were an important form of transportation in the trade activities taking place at the Singapore River in the early days.
