This 1983 photograph shows North Boat Quay (between Read Bridge and Canning Lane), from Boat Quay. There are shophouses along the bank of the Singapore River and bumboats are docked at the quay. Also known as tongkangs or twakows, these bumboats were an important form of transportation in the trade activities taking place at the Singapore River in the early days.
