Bumboats (also known as tongkangs in Malay) berthed at Boat Quay along Singapore River, which were used principally to transport cargo between ships in the outer harbour and godowns along the river. They were mostly operated by Indians until 1900 when Chinese Hokkiens and Teochews took over the trade and named their bumboats "twakows" after their dialect. -
