This 1968 photograph shows a three-storey white shophouse, which was occupied by a Chinese school for girls only. Feature includes full length French windows. Telok Ayer Street was set aside for the Chinese by Raffles in 1822. It was notorious in the 1850s, for its slave trade, and dealings in poor Chinese immigrants. Telok Ayer Street is 'water bay' in Malay. Title devised by Library staff.
