View of town and Singapore River, 1870 : aerial view [1]

This 1870 photograph has the handwritten letter "b" on the back. This photograph shows Ellenborough Market which was completed in 1845. It was situated on the bank of the river, between what are now Read Bridge and Coleman Bridge, and therefore had easy access to the goods brought in by barges. It was an open-sided building with low-slung roofs next to steps leading to the river. Title devised by Library staff. Date of creation estimated. (Caption source : Tyers, p20)
