This 1992 photograph shows Bencoolen Street, from the corner of Middle Road, towards Bras Basah Road. Rows of shophouses line one side of the street. In the distance, some high-rise buildings can be seen. Bencoolen Street was named after the British colony on the west coast of Sumatra where Sir Stamford Raffles was Lieutenant Governor.
