This 1992 photograph shows Bencoolen Street, from the corner of Middle Road, towards Bras Basah Road. Rows of shophouses line one side of the street. In the distance, some high-rise buildings can be seen. Bencoolen Street was named after the British colony on the west coast of Sumatra where Sir Stamford Raffles was Lieutenant Governor. Title devised by Library staff.
