Chinese labourer, circa 1950s

This is a 1950s photograph of a Chinese labourer taken when he was onboard a boat. Labourers were typically used for hard manual work and back-breaking tasks such as loading and unloading cargo. It was a common sight in early Singapore to see such labourers carrying gunny sacks filled with commodities near Singapore River. Part of a compiled album, with a label : "PHOTOGRAPHS BY : R.K. TYERS. Staff STRAITS STEAMSHIP CO., LTD. SINGAPORE." Date of creation estimated. Title devised by Library staff.
