Shop making and selling coffins in Sago Lane. A one-way street, connecting South Bridge Road to Banda Street, Sago Lane got its name from the many sago factories that used to be there in the 1840s. It was also popularly known for the Chinese "death houses" there. People believed to be living the last days of their lives, some of whom were destitutes, would be left at death houses to die. A "death house" consisted of a funeral parlour on the ground floor and a living space on the first. Hence, there were many shops in Sago Lane that sold paraphernalia used in funerals, such as paper models of buildings and vehicles, fake notes, clothes and flowers. These things were burnt for the deceased in the Chinese belief that a one could bring one's belongings to the next world when one dies. Likewise, there were several coffin shops, like the one shown in the photo.
