"Meet my food heroes!! These are just a few of the ‘uncles’ and ‘aunties’ who work day in and day out at Newton Food Centre. I moved to Singapore 12 years ago and I quickly learnt that part of the ‘requirement’ to be a true Singaporean (resident) is to be utterly crazy about FOOD!! Happy to say that I fit in quite well ? As you know this city’s landscape has evolved tremendously over the years, but some do stay the same and have become the constant in making this place feels like home, especially to me. Food centers typically are located the heart of local communities and they often take center stage in our daily lives with our families and friends. You can usually get some local grub at pretty much any time of the day (and night). But unfortunately all has suddenly changed since the start of Singapore’s Circuit Breaker period 6 weeks ago. During this trying time, most of these humble heroes are struggling and they need our help. Mask-up and head over to your nearest Hawker Centre and bring home your favorite dishes to be enjoyed with your family. Any little effort will help tremendously to ensure their survival. Let’s do what we can to support each other through this difficult time and most importantly let’s stay #sgunited"--Contributed by Lisa Kurniawan, as part of the "Documenting COVID-19 in Singapore" collection community call.
