This 1986 photograph shows the verendah, next to Bras Basah Road, towards Prinsep Street. It depicts a signboard of a merchandise "Oriental Book Store" hanging from the ceiling. Bras Basah is Malay for wet rice. In the early days, wet rice was laid to dry here on the banks of the Sungei Bras Basah, now known as the Stamford Canal. Title devised by Library staff.
