This photograph is a close-up of the inscription in Thai. The English translation has the words "His Majesty Somdech Phra Paramindr Maha Chulalonkorn - The Supreme King of Siam landed at Singapore, the first foreign land visited by a Siamese monarch on the 16th March, 1871". Title devised by Library staff. “พระบาท สมเดจพระ ปรมินทรมหาจุฬาลงกรณ์ พระ จุลจอมเกล้าเจ้ากรุงสยาม ได้เสดจพระราชดำเนินฃึ้นเมืองสิงคโปร์ เปนแผ่นดินต่างประเทศ ครั้งแรก ที่พระเจ้าแผ่นดินสยาม ได้เสดจพระราชดำเนิน เมื่อ ณวัน ๕ฯ ๑๑ ๔ ค่ำปีมเมียโทศ๊ก ๑๒๓๒”--Transcription contributed by Heng Wei Kiat.

Elephant statue presented by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) of Siam to commemorate his 1871 visit to Singapore, the first by a Thai monarch. The statue was erected outside Victoria Memorial Hall in 1892 before it was moved to outside the Court House in 1919. -
