Chinese seaman eating : half-length portrait



This is a 1950s photograph showing a Chinese man, in a singlet, eating his rice from a bowl using a pair of chopsticks (also known as kuai-zi) . Chopsticks are an important feature in Chinese culture. It is believed that the first chopsticks were developed over 5000 years ago in China. The photograph is part of a compiled album, with a label : "PHOTOGRAPHS BY : R.K. TYERS. Staff STRAITS STEAMSHIP CO., LTD. SINGAPORE." Title transcribed from album.
