This 1984 photograph depicts a house at no. 16 Marshall Road (east side near East Coast Road corner). Marshall Road is named after Captain H.T. Marshall, the first Chairman of the Municipal Commission in 1856 and agent for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company Ltd until 1859. Title devised by Library staff.

Lady Mary Wood, a paddle wheel steamer built in 1842 by Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O). With a gross tonnage of 553 and horsepower of 250, it was the first mail steamer to be dispatched to the Far East, with a stopover in Singapore. It arrived in Singapore on 4 August 1845. -
