Chng’s art and imagery often reflect her Asian roots. In the early 1980s, she became interested in the I-Ching (Book of Changes) – an ancient Chinese text that centers on the law of Yin and Yang, the idea of evolution of events and the acceptance of change – as a resource. Adapting the 64 hexagrams of the I-Ching, she laid them out in a chessboard format; this series eventually evolved into the Chess series of 2000-2001, furthering the theme of chance and impermanence. This work is part of the Singapore Art Museum Collection. Physical dimensions of original: 1740 x 1740 mm.
