This 1966 photograph shows a Peranakan house, together with its swinging doors in Malacca. These swinging doors (pintu pagar) are a typical feature of Peranakan houses, allowing in breezes while maintaining privacy. There are Chinese frescoes hanging above the windows and a gilded plaque above the door. The one hanging above the door is called a ji hoo which indicates the family name. Two lanterns hanging from the ceiling are called ji seh teng (surname lanterns). The lanterns usually bear the surname or family name of the house. Title devised by Library staff.
