This 1880s photograph shows a view of a seaside kampong. These Malay houses are built on stilts and raised above the water. A traditional kampong house usually has a main house called Rumah Ibu (meaning 'mother house') and a kitchen annex called Rumah Dapur. Sampans, likely owned by the villagers, are seen docked on the sea. Title devised by Library staff. Date of creation estimated.
