Market Street, 1890s : general view [2]

This 1890s photograph shows Market Street with shophouses on both sides of the street, and horse-drawn carriages travelling along the street. The street probably got its name from the nearby Telok Ayer Market or Lau Pa Sat. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, the street was well-known for the Indian "money lenders" or chettiars, that set up shop there, although there was a sizeable Hokkien community as well. Title from inscription, on front of photograph. Title devised by library staff. Date of creation estimated.
