This is a 1950s photograph illustrating a quartermaster manning the steering wheel in a ship. Quartermasters are usually assigned to bridge watches and their main task is to steer the ship and carry out orders given by the Captain or watch-keeping officers. Digitized from an album page containing 7 photographs described collectively as "A life on the ocean wave". Part of a compiled album, with a label : "PHOTOGRAPHS BY : R.K. TYERS.
