Background

David Lim Kim San (b. 7 May 1933, Singapore) has a diverse career in music which spanned over four decades, including educator, administrator, producer, advocate, vocalist and conductor.1 Lim’s contribution to the school band and choral movements began in the 1960s when he spearheaded the music education scene in Singapore, together with an elite group of specialists.2 He is also noted for his role as conductor of the Singapore Youth Choir (SYC) for more than two decades.3 In 1974, he led the choir at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales, where it won first prize in the youth category. Lim was conferred the Cultural Medallion in 1979 for his contributions to the nation.4 He was also awarded the COMPASS Meritorious Award in 2001.5

Early life
Lim was born into a large Peranakan family of 10 children.6 His poignant experience with music as a child was closely associated with wartime memories, and the solace drawn from his mother’s singing of hymns as the family hid in the Cathay building’s basement in 1941 to escape from the Japanese invasion.7

Lim’s childhood was spent in Telok Kurau, an area in the east coast of Singapore.8 His education at Telok Kurau Primary School was interrupted in 1941 by the Second World War, following which he spent three-and-a-half years studying in a Japanese school. He resumed his studies in English when the British returned to Singapore in 1945.9

During his secondary school days in Victoria School, Lim benefited from the mentorship of Benjamin Khoo and Paul Abisheganaden, both of whom he credits for his musical and career achievements.10

Career
In 1953, Lim pursued a teaching certification with specialisation in music.11 Upon graduation in 1955, he taught full time at Cantonment Primary School, followed by Bartley Secondary School.12 He later joined the Ministry of Education (MOE) as a visiting music teacher, during which he conducted classes in five schools and worked under the guidance of Khoo, who was then a senior specialist inspector.13 Khoo and Lim subsequently became the conductor and assistant conductor of the Combined Schools Choir respectively. The choir was later renamed SYC,14 and Lim took over the reins from Khoo in the late 1960s.15

Lim and Khoo initiated the school band movement in the mid-1960s. They organised the training of band instructors, as well as programmes for bands such as participation in national events like National Day.16

In 1969, Lim was promoted to head of music department in MOE. His responsibilities included supervising band instructors, school bands and choral projects.17 Under his leadership, the number of school bands were increased from four Boys’ Brigade bands in 1967 till it became compulsory for all secondary schools to have a band, guided by 55 full-time band instructors.18 By 1980, there were 325 school bands in Singapore.19

In 1970, Lim received a Commonwealth scholarship to study educational broadcasting in Australia.20 Then in 1972, he was awarded another scholarship to study music in Japan.21

Lim was appointed organising secretary of the inaugural Singapore Festival of Arts in 1977, as well as the second festival held in the following year.22 From 1981 to 1985, he was seconded to serve as general manager of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. He returned to MOE after his stint with the orchestra.23
