Wee Beng Chong

Background

Wee Beng Chong (黄明宗; Huang Mingzong) (b. 22 November 1938, Singapore–),¹ a renowned artist, was one of the first recipients of the Cultural Medallion when it was established in 1979.² Among the most versatile artists in Singapore, Wee has done sculpture, Chinese painting, Chinese calligraphy, seal engraving, wood-carving, oil painting, acrylic, watercolour, ceramic plates, finger painting, print-making, sketching, mixed-medium works and lithograph.³ He was also active in art education. He joined the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) in 1981, heading its Fine Art department from 1982 to 1989 before becoming a senior lecturer from 1990 to 2014. Wee also co-founded several art societies such as the Modern Art Society Singapore, Singapore Shicheng Calligraphy and Seal-carving Society, and Lanting Art Society. In addition, he has advised or headed art societies and events in Singapore, such as the Sculpture Society Singapore, Singapore Calligraphy Centre and the National Day Calligraphy & Painting Exhibition, among others.⁴

Family background and education
Wee is the eldest of 11 children born to a contractor and a housewife. His interest in art was displayed at a young age when he started drawing charcoal figures on the walls, and his first teacher was Yu Zuode (余作德).⁵

Wee studied at NAFA from 1955 to 1958. During this period, he learnt seal carving from Lin Qianshi (林千石) and Shi Xiangtuo (施香沱). Shi was also his teacher in ink painting. After graduating, Wee did commissioned works and saved enough money to further his studies in Paris. He studied at the sculpture department of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts from 1964 to 1969. Wee worked as a chef and took on other odd jobs to pay for his living expenses in Paris.⁶

Accomplishments
A versatile artist, Wee works with a wide range of art media, from modern sculpture to Chinese painting, calligraphy and seal engraving. He has participated in many solo and group exhibitions in Singapore and abroad. His works have been collected by private collectors and institutions in Singapore and overseas, such as the National University of Singapore, Public Utilities Board, Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation, Taman Suropati (Indonesia) and the National Art Gallery of Malaysia.⁷ 

For his artistic contributions, Wee has been conferred several awards from both local and overseas institutions, including the Cultural Medallion, Singapore’s highest national art award.
