Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore is formed 2nd Feb 1996

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) was formed on 2 February 1996[1] through the merger of the Marine Department, the National Maritime Board and the regulatory departments of the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA).[2]  Followingthe merger, the statutory functions of PSA were transferred to MPA. This led to the subsequent corporatisation of PSA on 1 October 1997 and its eventual listing on the Stock Exchange of Singapore.[3]

MPA was established to help achieve Singapore’s vision of becoming a world-class port and an international maritime centre providing excellent facilities and efficient services.[4] In addition to regulating and licensing port and marine services and facilities, the MPA manages maritime traffic and Singapore’s merchant fleet. It is also responsible for navigational safety and port and maritime security, and for ensuring a clean marine environment. MPA also advises the government on all matters relating to sea transport, promotes the use and development of the port, and formulates strategies to improve the business environment for maritime industries.[5]
