This is among the more well-known of Edwin Thumboo’s place-based poems. Dedicated to Hedwig Anuar, it describes time spent in the iconic old National Library building. Today, it continues to evoke memories of a place that was a part of many adult Singaporeans’ childhood. Edwin Thumboo uses the world of a well-stocked library to present a mixing of stories and cultures, all conducted within the development of a nation. Familiar campaign posters and architectural hallmarks are also alluded to. The inclusion of this poem will help to record a sense of lost places, early innocence, and national pursuits in Singaporean history.
