Singapore Multi Ethnic Dance Ensemble is a collaborative initiative where three prominent choreographers, namely Mrs. Neila Sathyalingam, Mdm Som Said and Ms Yang Chong Lian and their respective dance groups come together in representing Singapore during overseas performances. They have been performing since 1985 in many international dance festivals. The dance performance in this segment is aptly named Harmony, representing the racial cohesiveness that Singaporeans have achieved living in a multicultural society. The Malays express their happiness by beating the kompang and offering betel leaves as a mark of friendship. The Chinese display red cloth for prosperity and good fortune. The Indians offer garlands of beautiful flowers for blessing and everlasting friendship. The performers in this ensemble received inter-cultural dance training from the respective dance choreographers. Neila’s dance in this production reflects the Bharathanatyam dance tradition while being able to blend and reflect a collective identity in the collaborative segments. Neila, through this dance item, perpetuates the amalgamation of the three ethnic dance forms into one, creating unity in diversity.
