This is a poem that made significant contribution to the imagination of nation-building as a process in Singapore. It describes a meeting of four professionals: an academic, an architect, a civil servant, and a poet, Edwin Thumboo himself. In a way, this meeting symbolises a harmonisation of different forms of development that engage the country. The poet importantly reminds us that a city is not just about planning and building but also about its people and how they live for each other. This poem is one of the earliest reflections of modern city life to be found in Singaporean literature.
