Description
Head-and-shoulders portrait of Mr. William Henry McLeod Read, a businessman of A.L. Johnston and Company, a pioneer European mercantile firm, and Singapore's first nominated European Unofficial Member of the Straits Settlements Legislative Council in 1869 (During the colonial period, the Governor would nominate members of the public as Unofficial members). Together with a few others, he founded the Singapore Sporting Club in October 1842. He was Captain Commandant of the Singapore Volunteer Rifle Corps or SVRC from 1857 to 1864, and again from 1869 to 1874. He was Commodore of the Singapore Yacht Club; President of Chamber of Commerce (1867), Singapore Club (1886) and Tanglin Club (1879). Title devised by Library staff.
