Description
This is a head-and-shoulder portrait of Mrs. Harriet T. Doraisamy nee Vairakiam, the founder and Principal of St. Francis Girls' School from 1960 to 1980. She was a teacher at Methodist Girls' Afternoon School (1952); President of Methodist Girls' School Alumnae Association (1967, 1971); Member of Jalan Tenteram Community Centre Management Committee (1971) and Schools Appeals Board (1980); Chairman of Whampoa Community Centre Management Committee (1980); and Vice-Chairman of Whampoa Citizens' Consultative Committee (1986-1987). She was also conferred the Public Service Star (BBM) by the Government of Singapore in 1975 and the Public Service Star (Bar) in 1986. Her husband, Mr. Edwin J. Doraisamy (d.1959), was the son of Reverend M.R. Doraisamy [Michael Robert Doraisamy] (d.1933), Pastor of Tamil Methodist Church (1919-1924, 1931-1933) and a teacher at Anglo-Chinese School. Edwin was a teacher at Victoria School (1948-1955); and Principal of Queenstown Secondary Technical School (1956-Jan 1959). Title devised by Library staff.
