Description
This is half-length portrait of His Excellency Dato Syed Ibrahim bin Omar Alsagoff, the first Honorary Consul-General for Iraq (1950-1965) and later Ambassador of Saudi Arabia in Singapore (1965-1975). He was Municipal Commissioner and City Councillor in Singapore (1940-1954); Justice of Peace (1936); Honorary Consul for Tunisia (1963-1965); founder member and President of Inter-Religious Organisation (1966) and All-Malaya Muslim Missionary Society (1933-1966); Chairman of Singapore Muslim Advisory Board (1947-1965); Member of Council of the World Muslim League of Mecca (1975); and Senior Patron of Jamiatud Dakwatul Islamiah of Singapore (1975). His father, Syed Omar bin Alsagoff, was a rich Arab merchant and proprietor of Alsagoff & Company (1906-1927). His great great grandfather, Syed Abdul Rahman Alsagoff, was an Arab trader in spices and founder of Alsagoff & Company in 1848. Title devised by Library staff.
