Description
This is a head-and-shoulder portrait of Dr. Kwa Soon Bee, Permanent Secretary of Health and Director of Medical Services from 1984 to September 1996. He was Medical Director (1970-1972) and later Chairman of the Board of Directors (1989-1994) of Kandang Kerbau Hospital; Medical Director of Singapore General Hospital (1972-1984); founding Chairman of Singapore National Eye Centre (1989-Sep 1996); Director (since 1977) and later Chairman (1980-2003) of Jurong Bird Park; Director (since 1980) and later Chairman (Feb 1995-2003) of Singapore Zoological Gardens; Director and Chairman of Wildlife Reserves of Singapore (2000-2003). He was conferred the Public Administration Medal (Gold) in 1989 in recognition of his work in haematology and family planning, and Meritorious Service Medal in 1992 for his outstanding contributions to the development of the health service Singapore. Among his sisters are: Mrs. Lee Kuan Yew nee Kwa Geok Choo (柯玉芝), the late wife of the first Prime Minister of Singapore; Mrs. Yong Nyuk Lin nee Kwa Geok Lan (柯玉兰); and Mrs. Earnest Lau nee Kwa Geok Lian (柯玉莲), former Principal of Anglo-Chinese School (Junior) (Jul 1972-1976).
